Back in July I headed to Southern California to climb its 3 tallest peaks in 3 days as part of Adventure 16's 3 Peak Challenge. Who was crazy enough to join me? My folks of course! It turned out to be an amazing weekend and a reminder that staying active is the best medicine of all!
Rich with history, The Pasayten Wilderness in Washington State spans 531,000 acres, skirts more than 50 miles of the Canadian border, and is one of the largest wilderness areas in the contiguous US. Horseshoe Basin in its northeastern corner is a high alpine tundra-like environment unlike anything else in the state. It's been on my list to explore for far too long. Last weekend I finally ventured there and left in awe of its landscape, solitude, and wildness.
Hot springs have been used as a natural medicine for centuries and are rich in minerals that increase blood flow and circulation. If you're looking for a fun adventure and a little warmth, soak your way to better health by visiting one of Washington’s natural hot springs. These three springs offer a little something for everyone and have an incredible history.
I think it's easy for most of us to support our local search and rescue teams, but it's tough to grasp the level of effort required for a rescue. Some friends and I played mock victims for a large avalanche training exercise and witnessed firsthand the amazing skills and dedication of search and rescue volunteers.
Disappointment over my failed JMT attempt was replaced by excitement when I somehow lucked into Whitney day hike permits AND clearing smoke conditions. Standing on top of the Whitney summit at 14,505' with my dad and stepmom right next to me was proof that life rarely unfolds exactly as planned.
And just like that, one of my biggest dreams was over. Hiking the John Muir Trail in 2015 just wasn't meant to be. All I can do now is remember the amazing 8 days I had on the trail. I met incredible people, saw gorgeous country, and had one of the best experiences of my life.
Over 4th of July weekend I headed to the Sierras with my dad, stepmom, and friend to get some backpacking miles AND some altitude training in preparation for this summer's 18-day backpack. And I bagged my 2nd 14er: Mount Langley!
Ever just want to get in the car, hit the open road, and see where the wind takes you? If you're looking for itinerary ideas and want to sample some of Oregon's amazing diversity I've got a fantastic 650 mile Oregon road trip loop with waterfalls, mountains, volcanoes, high desert, a beautiful river, sand dunes, and the ocean!
I can't believe it's been a year since I joined family and friends in the Grand Canyon to complete the toughest and most memorable hike I've ever done: the Rim to the River and back in a day. I won't soon forget this experience in one of the most fantastic places in the world.
I can't tell you how excited I am to have finally checked off my first solo backpacking adventure! It was a "beary" exciting weekend of wildlife encounters, hot spring soaking, and beautiful trails!
This post was originally published on the Rad Girls Life blog and was written about my very first mountaineering outing: climbing Mount St. Helens in 2015 on New Year's Day.
I often call myself a serial soloist because I love solo hiking, backpacking, and adventures. When someone told me I should be scared to be in the woods alone it got me thinking. How many of you hike alone? Some thoughts and tips for going solo.
